As far as the both the music industry and the economy goes, for incredible numbers of individuals (maybe even you), this is the year of lost faith, hope and self confidence.
As with most things, in order to have a true sense of ownership and/or to create *Real* wealth, you have to own what it is that you make a living from. These are just two of the reasons why for the last 10 years I have continuously stressed the importance of owning your own label, taking the DIYS route and avoiding signing to a major label.
So with that said, it did not shock me much to hear the leader of one of the music industry’s most well known groups, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails say that his record company, Universal Records is “Run By Thieves”, lets take a look at that interview and then at the very end, I want YOUR comments. (we need to get at least 20 great comments to keep this type of information coming at you… Thanks!)
Oh and by the way if you are not familiar with who Trent Reznor and/or NINE INCH NAILS, the band has been around since ‘88, have recordings that have been nominated for 12 Grammys, they won two of those Grammy Awards and they have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, with 10.5 million sales certified in the US alone.
NINE INCH NAILS is primarily an industrial rock group, but this story will benifit everyone who reads it, even YOU because it shows you the direction that the industry is headed in and how you can reap huge benefits by just doing things right and as I tell you.
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails lets it rip at ignorant record companies to NEALA JOHNSON
ON stage at the Metro on Monday night, it seemed you’re enjoying being a rock star again. True?
It’s funny you’d say that ‘cos that was not one of my favorite shows.
It went downhill at one point.
Yeah. I enjoy playing these days. I try to make the most of it and sometimes it’s great fun and sometimes, like Monday night when it was crippled with technical problems, it made it not fun. I couldn’t hear what was going on, s— was breaking . . .
Fools in the crowd were yelling . . .
Yeah, mixed feelings about that.
I mean, if you want me to go off on a tangent . . . I’m kind of in a weird space right now. I’m not real centered. We’ve been touring for a long time. I went from the record right into the tour, nine weeks in Europe in winter, which I don’t recommend in any circumstance for anybody. I’m moving. There’s some stuff in my personal life that’s up.
It must be an odd time then to have a new album, Year Zero, out?
It’s a very odd time to be a musician on a major label, because there’s so much resentment towards the record industry that it’s hard to position yourself in a place with the fans where you don’t look like a greedy asshole. But at the same time, when our record came out I was disappointed at the number of people that actually bought it. If this had been 10 years ago
I would think “Well, not that many people are into it. OK, that kinda sucks. Yeah I could point fingers but the blame would be with me, maybe I’m not relevant”. But on this record, I know people have it and I know it’s on everybody’s iPods, but the climate is such that people don’t buy it because it’s easier to steal it.
You’re a bit of a computer geek. You must have been there, too?
Oh, I understand that — I steal music too, I’m not gonna say I don’t. But it’s tough not to resent people for doing it when you’re the guy making the music, that would like to reap a benefit from that. On the other hand, you got record labels that are doing everything they can to piss people off and rip them off. I created a little issue down here because the first thing I did when I got to Sydney is I walk into HMV, the week the record’s out, and I see it on the rack with a bunch of other releases. And every release I see: $21.99, $22.99, $24.99. And ours doesn’t have a sticker on it. I look close and ‘Oh, it’s $34.99′. So I walk over to see our live DVD, “Beside You in Time”, and I see that it’s also priced six, seven, eight dollars more than every other disc on there. And I can’t figure out why that would be.
Did you have a word to anyone?
Well, in Brisbane I end up meeting and greeting some record label people, who are pleasant enough, and one of them is a sales guy, so I say “Why is this the case?” He goes “Because your packaging is a lot more expensive”. I know how much the packaging costs — it costs me, not them, it costs me 83 cents more to have a CD with the colour-changing ink on it. I’m taking the hit on that, not them. So I said “Well, it doesn’t cost $10 more”. “Ah, well, you’re right, it doesn’t. Basically it’s because we know you’ve got a core audience that’s gonna buy whatever we put out, so we can charge more for that. It’s the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy it. True fans will pay whatever“. And I just said “That’s the most insulting thing I’ve heard. I’ve garnered a core audience that you feel it’s OK to rip off? F— you’. That’s also why you don’t see any label people here, ‘cos I said ‘F— you people. Stay out of my f—ing show. If you wanna come, pay the ticket like anyone else. F— you guys”. They’re thieves. I don’t blame people for stealing music if this is the kind of s— that they pull off.
Where does that extra $10 on your album go?
That money’s not going into my pocket, I can promise you that. It’s just these guys who have f—ed themselves out of a job essentially, that now take it out on ripping off the public. I’ve got a battle where I’m trying to put out quality material that matters and I’ve got fans that feel it’s their right to steal it and I’ve got a company that’s so bureaucratic and clumsy and ignorant and behind the times they don’t know what to do, so they rip the people off.
Given all that, do you have any idea how to approach the release of your next album?
I’ve have one record left that I owe a major label, then I will never be seen in a situation like this again. If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal. Come see the show and buy a T-shirt if you like it. I would put out a nicely packaged merchandise piece, if you want to own a physical thing. And it would come out the day that it’s done in the studio, not this “Let’s wait three months” bulls—.

NOTE From Ty Cohen: O.K… So if you DON’T see the importance of being your own person and owning your OWN label after reading this, you are in Huge trouble!!!!! Here is a guy that is basically a super star in the industry, someone who has been around the block, someone who has won Grammys, someone who has sold 20,000,000 + (thats TWENTY MILLION) records!! And he even realizes how important is is to be your “Own” person, the very same stuff that I teach and talk about in my emails, on my radio show, in my Sell Music Online Course Like Crazy course over at http://www.SellMusicOnlineLikeCrazy.com as well as my many other resources found on this page that you are reading.
Get with the program, stop chasing a record deal, stop wanting to be a slave, Prince shared this with us over a decade ago)
O.K., I’m done ranting… Now back to the interview…

When your US label, Interscope, discovered the web-based alternate reality game (ARG) you’d built around Year Zero, were they happy for the free marketing or angry you hadn’t let them in on it?
I chose to do this on my own, at great financial expense to myself, because I knew they wouldn’t understand what it is, for one. And secondly, I didn’t want it coming from a place of marketing, I wanted it coming from a place that was pure to the project. It’s a way to present the story and the backdrop, something I would be excited to find as a fan. I knew the minute I talked to someone at the record label about it, they would be looking at it in terms of “How can we tie this in with a mobile provider?” That’s what they do. If something lent itself to that, OK, I’m not opposed to the idea of not losing a lot of money (laughs). But it would only be if it made sense. I’ve had to position myself as the irrational, stubborn, crazy artist. At the end of the day, I’m not out to sabotage my career, but quality matters, and integrity matters. Jumping through any hoop or taking advantage of any desperate situation that comes up just to sell a product is harmful. It is.
Is the Year Zero ARG something labels will copy now?
Well, their response, when they saw that it did catch on like wildfire, was “Look how smart we are the way we marketed this record”. That’s the feedback I’ve gotten — other artists who’ve met with that label ask ‘em about it: “Yeah, you like what we did for Trent? Look what we did for Trent”. They’ve then gone on to try to buy the company that did it to apply it to all their other acts. So, glad I could help them out. I’m sure they still don’t understand what it is that we did or why it worked. But I will look forward to the Black Eyed Peas ARG, that should be amazing.
Be sure to pick up the Nine Inch Nails Album, “Year Zero” (on Universal ;). It is out now and it is an AMAZING CD.

$4 for a download using paypal?? Sounds good to me. Hopefully this will become a reality.
I’m not even a fan, but I would buy it just to prove a point to the other musicians out there. They can market their own material, and they don’t have to keep signing with these BS labels that try to DRM a CD!
The first time I bought a CD that I couldn’t rip to MP3 was the last time I bought a CD.
I agree. Points to Trent.
I’m psyched to see what Trent does once the contract is up. I’m a fan, so I’m biased, but to tell you the truth, if he charged for a download and it was $12 instead of $4 and I knew it was all (or mostly, minus costs, etc.) going to him, I’d pay it gladly. Hell I’d do that for all the bands I like.
When I know that maybe 5% (ballparking here) or less goes to an artist when I buy a $18 CD or download or whatever, it’s pretty disconcerting. I’m buying music because an ARTIST made it, not so some corporate ***** who didn’t do ***** to make the album sound the way it does can buy a new car. ***** that. I’ll pay so Trent can get some hot ride, but not some anonymous whitecollar prick.
The music industry is too funny.. In pretty much any other I can think of, they try to come up with good deals to make you stick as a customer, for dedicating yourself to a service, and so on. But with the music industry, they see it as a challenge to rack up the prices as high they can…
It’s like if a restaurant owner would see you come as a common guest and instead of cutting your cost a little once in a while because you become a good and frequent customer, he starts thinking of how much more he can charge you compared to his other visitors. Screwed up logic for sure… And they keep getting away with it.

This is exactly what I’m saying. Theres hardly any need for the labels anymore. Artists are fully capable of distributing the music themselves at virtually no cost. Trent is ahead of the times but only because “the times” are being kept behind by the music industry.
Punk, Hip Hop, hardcore and other genre’s have been doing this for ever, producing, printing, and releasing your own material.
But I really think with the internet and more means becoming available for the common person to do this on there own I see no reason why a dedicated artist could not do it on there own or under a small label and match or even surpass anything a large record label would do.
Here’s to hoping reznor follows through and his claim.
Another killer post Ty!
This is amazing. I’m not even a NIN fan and I think its amazing. I think its about time some major artist/band does exactly whats he is talking about; say heck with the labels, put out an album soley over the web for a decent price, and teach the industry big wigs a lesson.
This article says it all. I can’t believe how the labels
want to punish the loyal fans by making them pay more for a particular artist’s music based on his/her popularity. Are they Crazy? People will buy a CD if the price is right, But don’t gouge them just becuase it’s someone who is more popular than other artist’s. I have favorite artist’s but there is a limit to what I’d pay for their CD’s. $35.00 seems like an awful lot of money for any CD, even a double Boxed Special Edition set! I am not a NIN Fan per say, But Trent Reznor just may have earned himself a new fan based on his honesty and integrity as an artist. I can’t believe this sort of thing is even legal! It’s like the gas Stations who were Gouging people at the Pump Right after 9/11 tregedy happened. The government stepped in and started going after the Station Managers for price Gouging. This seems alot like Price Gouging to me!
All I can say is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Like Trent said, the labels have absolutely no idea what they are doing these days and are trying to rely on what worked in the past, instead of trying to embrace the future.
I have to say I’m not at all surprised (unfortunately as it may be) to hear this unjustifiable behaviour on behalf of major labels.
My better days are before me for sure, and I can witness to how an artist can get f…kd very bad.
No I haven’t made millions yet,( notice I’ve said yet) because I was always ripped very bad at the very beginning of my releases by the labels while I was working under a different artist name so they’ve only made a few thousand, more than likely a few hundred thousand with all their (back door marketing tricks), before everything fell apart and they’ve eventually lost the singles them selves due to their own stupidity.
I’ve gotten tired of this crap so I’ve changed my name to work independently and I’ve started my own small label as Ty as said.
Due to the lack of money my CD production could have turned out much better but I was desperate to have something physical in my hands to show people some of my undiscovered and ignored talents.
I’m in the process of raising capital for launching a radio PR + TV PR campaign soon to kick start my career even at this stage in my life. ( stage meaning, ” I’m not 28 any more, but it’s never to late to shake hands and move in with you’re own destiny.
NIN is a very cool band and it pleases me to see such artist’s icons step forward and say to the Pimpin Record Industry Fk..U we will show you that the there is truth to the shortest distance between two points for success is: the artist and their public!

great article! we were never going to sign with a record label anyway, but this just confirms our reasons why! Also thanks to Trent for the great music! LOVE Year Zero! Also, Please people…quit ripping off these talented artists!
Nice to see big artist, doing what should of been done at the break of the internet and mp3’s. like many industries the record companies only exist becouse of the need to sustain jobs.
suppose you could call them parasites feeding off the talented.
This is the exact reason that we have kept Western Civ completely unaffiliated! We released their last album (which was produced by Mitch Easter who also produced REM, Pavement and Dinosaur Jr.) under the name “nomorefakelabels.com” which is sort of our own little rebellion!
Thanks Trent, for not sugar coating what musicians have to deal with these days! The up and coming artists all over the world need to know what they are in for!
KEEP INDIE ALIVE!!! BUY INDIE MUSIC!! (even if it’s not ours!;)
But, if you feel so inclined, you can get Western Civ’s music here:

I love to read all this kind of interviews and articles. It helps me to stay focused and well informed about the music bussiness.
I also would like to invite you to visit my web page and listen to my music.
Thanks and greeting from Colombia!
omg i woudent guess thats why you cheack before you hire some one
I’m feeling everything this article had to offer poiwer to the people and to a new structure of the music industry!!!!
This is the second entry I read tonight. And I am on my third. Got to think which one is next. Thank you.
Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.
Thanks.what a lengthy and in depth article but full of useful information
Thank you! You often write very interesting articles. You improved my mood.
Very interesting, I have heard this kind of information before. I think that it is the rock bottem truth and has been the story for many years. Thanks to the internet
the major lables which held a monopoly on the music industry
for years are now getting pushed out, The new problem now is the stealing that is going on. Now that we can be in contreol I think that we need to resist the urge to increase the price to offset the loss of what gettes stolen, because that will only encurage more people to steal.
Thanks to Trent for giving us all some things to think about and beware of. Glenn at GaSongWriters.com
oh way to go trent!! Good for him to take matters into his own hands. You cant let money suckers hide your true talent and true being. Let your fans know your in this for the music and for them, and NOT for the money like these record labels these days.
Thank you Ty for this wonderful article! I truly feel for Trent. I have heard so many horror stories like this about record labels, so have lost any desire of going that route long ago.
I have used all the indie methods from the beginning including producing my own cds, covers and all. Have also had a manufacturer replicate, but have so many cds out now, it’s too expensive to replicate 1000 of each (14 cds).
Downloads are a great way to go on your website and yes using paypal. They have a tool that took forever to locate called micropayments for downloads ($2 download costs you 15 cents). Here is the link: https://micropayments.paypal-labs.com/
Now you can sell your own downloads and keep most all of the money. My site has been doing great since adding the downloads, selling individual songs and whole albums. You save shipping costs and no physical product to produce!
Why give the labels all the money when you do all the work!
Well Drainage X has a been a band for 7 years, always been independant this is very hard to do even with 92% of bands going independant right now. The way the record labels have the majority of the market lock down nearly impossible to penitrate they have all the major booking agents, management, venue’s and all the distrubution companies. That constantly give you the run around they put the responsibity off on each other depending on who your dealing with @ that time. Now the internet has helped with this alot in the past years but with-out lots of money for marketing or a room full of full time bloggers you get no where very fast, then you have all the stealing going on. Drainage X has done 5 national tours with very large acts spent lots lots lots of money on tours, marketing, and merchandising but to compare to millions of dollers a major label spends how can you compare. please tell me how ? when you spend money on internet marketing but the stealling of digital down loads you don’t even make your money back. A business can’t take a loss all the time! till next time Evil Sins from Drainage X check us out on http://www.myspace.com/drainagex p.s. our nwe album End of the world is coming next week look for it and buy digital downloads its the best christian heavy metal album ever………….
This is the perfect story and the real deal of why old school record label exec’s should be taken completely out of the picture and out of everybody’s pocket book. Artist are perfectly capable of distributing their own music at fair pricing to the public, but the record labels are so focused on how to continually line everybody else’s pockets while ripping off the artist and their fans. Just need to get rid of all the old dinasaurs at the record labels, go with direct marketing, and figure out how to stop Peir to peir sharing. So the artist can properly market their music at a fair price to their fans, with a decent profit to the artist and not line the pockets of every greedy suit and figure head.
A great article!
Having been involved in music for many many years and knowing how record companies have ripped off many artists over the years, I welcome the day that artists take full control over their products. In this day of the internet, this can and will be done. I would urge any and all artists to do some research and look at the many ways that their music can be marketed without the big record companies being involved. Developing your own label is easy and now marketing your product is simple. Develop your strategy and set goals and objectives and the rest will come. The bottom line is…if people like what they hear…they will buy it! Now that we have ways to market the product, all we have to do is get it out there…and keep plugging.
This is interesting and what makes this unique is that we, the individual artist / musician can now move on to bigger and better challenges.
With this info at hand, we can stay in control and focused on what we really need to do and that is to… Take Charge and Do It Yourself a little help from real friends who actually want to help you succeed by helping you run your own label.
This would be the actual scope of it all and has given me some insight to my own label.
RADARLOVE
It’s really worrying to see how the majors manipulate the system for their own gain. I have read this post before and it really gives you a deepa insight that this is the time for the indie. It’s like cooking the food and setting up the dinner table, but you only get the leftovers. NO THANK YOU! I had an opportunity a few years back to sign with a major and I’m glad i didn’t. Thank you Ty and everyone else that keeps us informed and educating us to watch out and to DIY.
