I posted this to Twitter before posting it here and was almost immediatly told by several people that this post was single handly some of the best, if not the absolute best information that they have been given in a long time, by anyone…. So what I want you to do is read it, and then leave your comment.. I enjoy hearing what your thoughts are.
Question…. Why is your music career not where you deserve it to be?
Second question…. Who is to blame? Don’t answer that yet because the answer may surprise you…
You see several years ago, I almost Died…. Not once, but multiple times.. It’s a story that I don’t share with many people, but there comes a time in YOUR life (as in YOU) when you need to have things revealed to you, and now is the time.
There will be thousands of people that will eventually read the words that I am about to share with you, most will take them as just words and go about their day…. But only a handful, in fact a very small percentage of the people that read this, including YOU will allow them to change their lives… So lets keep it going…
Here I was in the intensive care unit of the hospital with tubes hanging out of every breathing area of my body that I could imagine (and some I didn’t even know I had!).. Near death, the pain medication that my doctor had me on made me loose a sense of reality, but I still knew that I deserved more.. Hell I was only in my twenties.. How could I die, So young? so easily? So quickly?
The answer was simple, I had inherited a little known blood disorder called “Sickle Cell Anemia”. The same disease that killed my older sister, one that I very much loved, when SHE was just in her twenties… As I type this, I can still remember her being in the hospital for what seemed to be months on end, suffering from the “effects” of having Sickle Cell…. Things like Kidney failure, immobilization and everything else that you can imagine but don’t want to.
I can also remember being just 13 years old and hearing the phone in our house ring what seemed to be the most memorable, echoing ring that I have ever heard since… As I stood on the stairs, my older brother Ricky answered it “Hello”…. Then in seconds his face became emotionless with tears pouring from both eyes…. At that point I knew two things…. #1 that my sister Gwen had died and that I would never see her smiling face again and #2 that since I was the only other sibling to have Sickle Cell Anemia… That I was next, it was just a matter of time… So I might as have my fun in life now, which turned out to be an early life of negative destruction, one that stripped the value from my life and made the lives of others even less valuable to me… One that made drugs, alcohol, money and sex high priorities.…
I guess you can say that since I already “knew” that I was going to die at a young age, that I might as well “Live on the Edge”… I could not have had a more foolish mindset… I’m not proud of some of the things that I did, but I use that period of my life as one of my main motivators for helping as many others as I possibly can, including YOU.
You see, for most of use, yes even you, we live life on the edge, by that we gamble with the idea of knowing that today, yes the very day that you are reading this… Could be our last day alive, it was for me that day in the hospital…
Yet even knowing how unpredictable life is, we still mistreat our loved ones, hate other people (and usually we have no idea why.. How “Smart” are we?) and NEVER live up to our full potential.. We play and toy around with dreams of being rich, dreams of being a well known singer or musician or rapper…
Yet are we ever really serious about achieving our goals?
Do we ever “Really” believe that the live we currently live is just a mili-fraction of what we truly strive for and rightfully deserve…..
What do you “Think” is really holding you back??
Is it life, is it school? Your children? Spouse? Perceived lack of money? Lack of time? Lack of talent? No one will understand your music? I’m not in LA, NY, Tennessee, Atlanta, etc, etc, etc….
The real reason is simply…. Your self belief… Trust me, this is one that I battled with for years… My surroundings, health, lack of money, growing up in the “hood”, being an alcoholic who compulsively smoked weed, being skinny, ugly and everything else effected my “Self Belief” just as whatever it is that you “Perceive” to be the reason why you can’t succeed is holding you down.
Then I realized something, just as you will realize it as well, in time, the longer you stay with me, the more you read my emails, the more you tune into the Motivational Music Radio Show, the more you watch our YouTube channel… You will slowly start to see a growth pattern, one that pulls you closer to your very much deserved dreams, no matter what they may be. (I’ll reveal what that is in a moment, hold on)
You see whatever reason you give yourself for not being successful…… Is simply…. Well simply… BULLSHIT!!!!!
The world is bursting with possibility. There are unlimited opportunities just waiting for those who dare to pursue them: new businesses, new volunteer opportunities, new books to write, new masterpieces to paint, new friends to meet, and most importantly for you.. More people to expose your music to… More fans to share the sounds of your talent with. Whether you reach out and grab what you want depends on whether you believe that you can!
• “Believe in your dreams and they may come true; believe in yourself and they will come true” – Author unknown
• “You can have anything you want if you will give up the belief that you can’t have it.” - Robert Anthony
• “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities!” - Norman Vincent Peale
• “If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can’t, you’re right.” - Mary Kay Ash
• “One comes to believe whatever one repeats to oneself sufficiently often, whether the statement be true of false. It comes to be dominating thought in one’s mind.” - Robert Collier
Anything can be achieved if you have the firm intent to make it happen and confidence in your own ability to get it done. The future might seem daunting, but think of what you’ve been through to reach this point today! The hells that I have been through are nothing.. And now I am so much better prepared for anything that the future holds, good or bad… How strong are you? Let me answer that for you.. You are VERY strong.. You’ve made it this far, when others have not.. Yes YOU are very, very strong!
Think of all the obstacles that you have left behind you, even if they have left scars, in order to be the person reading these words now. You did it! What could stop you now? Nothing!
I believe in you, now you just have to believe in yourself. Lets grow together….
I’m off to the movies with my oldest daughter Mia….In the mean time, I need to get 20 comments on this post in order to keep them coming… I want to hear from YOU, not later, but right now… Believe in yourself enough to share just a few words with me in exchange for this post.
I want to know what your thoughts are… Do it now and you’ll be taking the first step toward being a more Focused, Disciplined, Treasure deserving person.

What you say makes alot of sense. I think that fear and self doubt is the main reason why goals aren’t accomplished
June 17th, 2009 @8:15 pm
Belief in yourself is the #1 key to success!!!
June 17th, 2009 @8:25 pm
Hey Doc! Man this was an awesome blog post! Let me first say that I’m sorry to hear that about your older Sister and you and your family have my deepest sympathy. But, I also understand where you are coming from about our talents, gifts, and our outlook on life! Because you saw your sister suffer and die because of this illness and you also had traces of it, you automatically placed yourself in the same category that you were also gonna die as well. Therefore, with this misconception, you tried to live it up all in the wrong ways! I hear ya man! I also understand what you are saying about achieving your goals and dreams! One more phrase for your post-Off the chain! Peace man!

You are doing a very good service for others as well as for yourself. Your words are true, powerful, contagious and motivating.
Thanks you.

Ty Cohen I have to give it to you, once again you have poured your heart into providing information that others are either to scared to talk about, don’t want us to know about or think that we are to stupid to understand.
It all starts in the mind, after that anything is possible.
Thank you my friend

Ty, your blogs are indeed the best. Thank you for sharing not only your story but also so much inspiration as well. Moving beyond one’s limiting beliefs is one thing but destorying them determines one’s success. Your life’s story exemplifies this and encourages me that the only thing that hinders me from achieving my dreams is how I think about myself. My best to you and yours, Katrelia

Thanks for the encouragement and inspirational words. That what you say is true. For I am a living and breathing testimony. But my determination and will to succeed.(And not to mention the power of positive thinking. For we are an reflection of our thoughts.) So I would like to say thanks. For caring and getting involved. Because in order for us to get better as a nation. We must start thinking better. Doing away with the old pessimistic way of thinking. And incorporating a new pledge. We Can and We Shall Overcome. It starts with that person you look at every morning in the mirror. YOURSELF! I’m sorry im trying to take Mr. Cohens job.lol!
God Bless All

finally someone in the music world is on my page and reading the same books! thanks for you posts. Your are doing what I want to be doing! Spreading the word about the success philosophy
June 17th, 2009 @10:21 pm
Thank you for that excellent posting.I think your right on. One thing I would like to add. It has been my experience in the music business(2 successful albums), that in order to have a successful CD, you have to really want it more than anything in the world.Be willing
to do what it takes to get it done, whether it’s practise, time investment, money,or study, just get off your duff and gett’er DONE! Nobody will do it for you! Be HUNGARY for that accomplishment. If your give it your best planned out shot,YOU will be SUCCESSFUL.Whether you sell one CD or a Million.Set
realistic goals, attain them, then set more goals.Do’nt worry about your competition, most of them are not willing to pay their dues. Most important,do’nt forget to pray.God did’nt put you here to be a failure.Good luck and God Bless!

As I read this post I think about my life, where I’ve been and what I’ve done. Realizing what I’ve been through to get to this point. You are absolutely right. The only person stopping me right now is me. Once I move myself out of the way… There’s no stopping me. Thanks for the words of encouragement and telling it like it is. Always on time, with the words.

Thanks for the postive affirmation Tye we need to learn to encourage are selfs when it seem like others want. I too have had just recently a very scary moment in my life when I found out that I had PE pulmonary Embolism which is several BLOOD CLOTS on BOTH LUNGS. I to ended up in the hospital and on my death bed but deep inside I remembered what I have said to others in the past hold on. I didn’t expect this and had been at my job for 8 years never signed up for shorterm disability so that means no income but I remember that the power greater than my self gave me talent and I’m now sharing it with the world online. Have i made money yet no but I know that it’s coming one thing that i encourage people with who are struggling is tough times don’t last always but tough people do your story really inspired me to go on. As i continue to network and meet new people everyday Im first glad that you made it. I’m home bound daily my doctors afraid of the CLOTS moving to my heart so i’m in his eyes limited but I truly belive GOD didn’t bring me this far to leave me and thats goes for you too. Peace and Love my Brotha also check out my song talking about Wake up my brother encouraging brothers that they have purpose. at showcaseyourmusic.com/robyntraylor

I would say that has been my one major problem.
Completely believing in myself, no matter what, and it has been my one single most down fall.
Thank you for your words of encouragement!
It means everything!
June 18th, 2009 @1:06 am
Ty,
As usual you hit it right on the head. So many times people allow their present and past situations to dictate their futures. What they miss is that we go through trials and tribulations through our life, but how we come out is the most important. I always encourage the young and old alike to reach for the stars and believe in yourslef, for as the Bible says “To thine ownself be true”. My prayers are with you as I know the pain of sickle cell, (I have seen my cousins wife die from it). Thank you for sharing and encouraging us all. May God Bless and Keep you in his Grace.

June 18th, 2009 @2:51 am
i want to say sorry for your lost but you have to be strong and that you did. and i feel that everything you said here was very inspirational and encouraging not only to me but for everyone who have read your words. this is something that i have needed to hear. and i thank God for you and your words.
June 18th, 2009 @3:53 am
Thanks for that. It was inspirational and it was a good reminder to me of how I used to be before. I somehow lost track of myself lately, but after reading this I feel motivated once again. I strongly believe that self-belief leads to success. Without it, and with only doubts in yourself, negative thoughts will fill your mind and it will affect you through stress, indecisiveness, depression, etc. So why live life that way, when all it takes is for YOU to believe in yourself that you can do it.
Never forget as well that there is God involved. He who loves us unconditionally, and as long as we believe in him and love him, he will take extreme care of us.
June 18th, 2009 @5:59 am
Ty, you took the time and brought the heat here. Thanks for taking the time to share it with us. It’s GREAT!!!

June 18th, 2009 @9:58 am
Thank you very much.
June 18th, 2009 @11:30 am
I am very glad to see a post with substance like this,
something that will actually help,
something real.
After all, like you said, they don’t mention this topic much in the industry. Even when it is mentioned, its on some “do what you do” and “can’t say I didn’t help” type b.s.
In other words it isn’t given as much worth as it deserves. This is probably the most important aspect of this and all other careers paths.
I believe you can’t just hear it or say it. You have to feel it, live it and be it also.
God gave us more power than we actually use. Ofcourse, certain entities don’t want us to use these powers so they feed us a bunch of media b.s. to keep our minds elsewhere.
This is one reason why I love/make independent music.
Thanks Ty
June 18th, 2009 @11:38 am
You are definitely right. A strong belief in SELF is what separates those who refuse to lose or come up short, from those who have it but die with it still inside of them.
“Great it is to dream the dream, when you stand in youth by the starry stream. But a greater thing is to fight life through, and say at the end, the dream was true.”
June 18th, 2009 @12:15 pm
this is absolutely true and i appreciate everything that was said and the fact that it will inspire people also great work!!!
June 18th, 2009 @12:33 pm

You awakened something that I believe, and have for quite some time. But “actively” believing in something are two different things.
Thanks for reminding me.

June 19th, 2009 @7:19 am
You have hit a very important point. Self belief and one of the most important things to make it work is setting goals. However, many people set goals and wait for things to happen. The other secret is that setting goals is really like clearing the fog in your mind so you now know where to go but that will not work unless you add three important elements, time frame, focus and action.
In other words you have to do things about your goals or they do not happen. The latest thinking is that if you visualize these goals daily with the three actions then you become driven and your mind has its priorities in order.
It all makes sense when you think about it but if you do not add a bit of determination nothing happens.
Keep up the good work.
June 19th, 2009 @10:15 am
I never really read your emails. This one I found the time to read it and Im glad I did. If we had more people who love themselves enough to take a chance some of our low income familys would have a little more.
June 19th, 2009 @12:21 pm
Yes! Those are brilliant words, and so true! In the recent past, I had been battling myself with those thoughts of “Why would something great happen to me?”. It’s ridiculous, because when I look back over my life, I have always achieved everything I’ve set out to do, and happily too, I might add! A recent decline in my web design business is leading me BACK to my musical path, and even though finances have suffered, I really BELIEVE, and have had proof that God and the universe will bring abundance to my life by not only my efforts, but my strength in my faith as well. We are ALL capable of having the very best, and certainly will always have what we need through this way of thinking. Luke - 11:9 says, “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” It is SO true! We suffer at our own design; not God’s design. Look up, around and within, and you will find your abundant path and true peace. Thank you for those words of wisdom! http://www.owespirit.com/Food/06-09a.rss

INGLES:
Your message is very important, overcoming and encouraging, and is a clear demonstration of non-surrender to adversity, and on the contrary, echoes the pain of others, to help others.
Excuse me who do not manage the English language, therefore I must be using an internet translator for the Spanish spend their post, but I really like his post and also their websites. Desire of heart, God bless permanently to continue their great work.

Those words are True. If you have no Drive there is no ride. The drive is believing in yourself. Don’t let any obstacle get in your way- if there is a will there is a way. That is what I have learnt myself through life and from many others, specially you TY just since about two years ago.
You need to believe in your dream and put it into action to make it come true.
You got to do it if there is no action (do it) it will not come true.
I hope everyone achieves what they deserve.

This blog is a real eye opener to all aspiring artist(s). I constantly sign up for talent shows, school performances, and so forth and so forth and my friends all ask me “Why are you so confident?” and “Why do you keep signing up for performances?” I ask them “Did you here what you just said? You just asked me ‘Why do I believe in myself, and why am I following my career path to sucess?” Some people in life are happy to see your faliure, but if you keep trying and persuing your goals in life then the word failure should’nt be in your vocabulary. That person should have no effect on you what-so-ever. The only thing that automatically adds the word “failure” to your vocabulary is your own dis-belief in yourself. Failure is not a word used in my household. I believe in myself too much to relate to a failure. I’m not being cocky or concieted. I’m being true to myself.
Thx Mr.Cohen
July 15th, 2009 @8:33 pm
Thank you for the e-mails, they are very inspiring for me. My problem has always been that i doubt myself sometimes. I need to realize that many people have told me not to worry that I can do this. And i would not really listen to them, i would just say “yeah i guess so” or ‘if yousay so” and that sort of thing. But deep down im not happy unless i am singing and dancing and that’s all i ever think about. I wake up in the morning and that is the first thing on my mind. This is what i need to be doing and I’m not going to give up. You are right.

Hey Ty,
It nver seems to stop amazing me my man of how much we have in common. I have a nephew who has sickalcel animia,so i know all about the pain you are going through.
As far as my comments we are the reason why we dont succeed in life and fulfill our dreams. We are always having negative thoughts or some kind of excuses, but you are like the voice of the people for the people of this music game. Please dont ever stop giving the people the hope that they to can have success and full fill their dreams.
Thanks my man!!

INSPIRATIONAL BROTHER!!!You have set a blaze to a kindling fire that has been struggling to stay lit for a long time. The jewels that you have dropped are universal but the task has to be individually tackled in order to have self growth within ourselves.Your right,We all have the potential to be great and do great things because of the things set in our character traits that make us strong! What ever ingredients they may be,We need to utilize our experiences and the tools that we have present at hand to bulid and structure our dreams today and make them a vivid reality tomorrow!but that takes initiative and initiative on a constant basis not just in the beginning our the journey that you will be embarking on,sieze the day and the following days after and become the conquering champion of your own personal goals that YOU invision, and remember BELIEVE IN YOURSELF,EVEN IF NO-ONE ELSE WILL.THANKS TY,KEEP ON DOING WHAT YOU DO……..1(Hawk Powerz)

Thank You dear Ty! It’s a powerfull, emotional and tragicall article! I was very thik in my childhood too.
You’re absolutely right! Believe yourself! The same words I ever say to my friends when thay say “I can’t…” And my life was success in business (I was a doctor). And than at the 35 years old I decided to become a musician-composer.It always was my child dream.I start to study play the piano, than left mu business, buy the PC and start to compose my music. It was the crazyest step in my life,I think…
I was very inspired of Kitaro’s musical and life way and thought that the main thing is to be able to express the beautiful and glorious pictures that I saw in my mind through music and that’s all,-success is here!… O, how naive I was
At first,to express my feelings and emages is not too simple as I thought… Hours and days and nights I spent in front of monitor, mistaces, mistaces and mistaces… English is not my native language(I’m from Ukraine)… It was not the life I’ve imagined…
And when I’ve finished my first CD and upload it at soundclick.com there were 3000 plays … and just ONLY 10$ income. And it was all I earned for SIX YEARS!!!!!!… Despair I ever fill before…
May be it was a mistake to think I can to be a composer? But I hear that my music is not bad…
May be there are too much musicians in the world today?…
May be… anything….

Being in this business for years and experiencing many changes I have asked the same question. What I have found is the artist has to be great in his/her self awareness of why they want to achieve what they want to achieve. It’s not all about fame..this comes with the achievement of the artist’s goals. It’s about knowing and pressing to do what you have to do. You have to know the business or find someone who does..and that you trust them. You have to rock major league with your sound…live performances as well as studio recordings. Show no mercy with sound production…studio or live performance. Work with your creative mind and others who have experience in this business.
