“You are limited only by your fears.” - Fran Watson, from Risk
*****************************************************

Over the many years of speaking and dealing with people from all walks of like in this industry, I’ve found that there are just a few things… Excuse me… Just a Few SIMPLE, easily conquered things that separate the EXTREMELY successful from those that are not successful.
In fact, the #1 trait that most successful people have learned to overcome is FEAR
Although we don’t give it much thought at times, fear is much more common in your life then you probably realize. In fact, every single one of us, including me have certain fears rushing through our head on a daily basis.
It could be the fear of performing live, being rejected in the music industry, speaking publicly, losing your job, getting older, death, or anything else that you can think of! Fear surrounds us on a daily basis. Even when you procrastinate, it’s often because you have some hidden fear that you won’t be able to get the job done, or be good enough or be accepted.
I’be heard many people define fear as False Expectations Appearing Real, which is FALSE… I means thats a nice Acronym. but it is not an appropriate definition… To me, an appropriate definition of fear is “Envisioning future failure”, because if you think about it, most of our fears, if not ALL of them are based in the future.
The longer you let fear control your life and it’s outcome, the less success you’ll see. To reverse this, you must know why you are afraid. You also must know the fundamental truths behind your fears.
When it comes to fear, there are five basic truths, so knowing and understanding each one will allow you to defeat any fears that you may have. That’s not to say that you will never be afraid again (because you will, its just the way our mind functions). It’s simply saying that whenever fear strikes, you will be able to face your fear dead in the eye and not let it take over. You will take firm control of your life so that nothing in this world will stop you and you will see more of the things that you desire come into your life.
So, Lets Rock…. Here are the five truths of fear…
#1: As long as you continue reaching for new goals and stretching your capabilities, you will always have new fears that will replace your old ones..
The first one nay be a little tough for some people to understand, so try reading it a few times to really get it. First, you need to understand that there is no cure for fear. No matter how good you get at conquering fear, you are still going to have fears come up from time to time, again, because of the protective nature of our mind that is how it works for us.
It’s important that you understand this no matter how disappointing it may be, fear is something that you will experience, the key is to know how to properly deal with it. It is also crucial for you realize that although you are going to have fears for the rest of your life, the way that you handle those fears can change, which is the purpose of this article.
For the first truth, remember that as you set new goals, fear will find it’s way in some how. It’s at that point that you remember the next four truths of fear. By doing so, your fear will diminish.
#2: The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it.
In the first truth, you learned that fear is going to happen in your life constantly. What truth #2 is saying is that when that fear arrives, the only way to get rid of it is to go out and do it.
Think about someone who is afraid of performing in front of large crowds. How could someone possibly get rid of this fear?
Well, it’s quite simple actually. They have to get in front of larger and larger audiences! There’s no other way around it. If they are ever going to rid themselves of their fear, there is going to have to be a point where they suck it up and do it. It’s common sense. The problem is that when it comes to fear, we often fail to forget what is logical.
In order to conquer your fear, you must remind yourself that the only way that this fear is ever going to go away is if you go out and do it. Which leads to truth #3…
Truth #3: The only way to feel better about yourself is to go out and do it.
When we have a fear, we tend to procrastinate facing it until later. Yet, when we procrastinate and realize we still haven’t done it, it only makes us feel worse.
When we put off our fear, our confidence suffers. Our self-esteem goes down. Then we start to feel depressed and it starts to take a toll on our health, well being and mindset.
The third truth is very similar to the second. The only way to pick yourself up and to feel better again is to face your fear and hit it head on. By doing so, you can move on with your life. Also, the more you learn to face your fears when they arise, the more confidence you start to have in yourself. As you do this, it is extremely important you give yourself a small reward… This helps to train your mind that conquering fear leads to reward, which it does ![]()
Over time, you start to feel invincible. You start to have the confidence that there is nothing that you can’t handle. This confidence is important to have if you are ever going to make it far in life and more specifically if you are ever going to make it in the music industry.
#4: It’s not just you that experiences fear whenever you are in unfamiliar territory, EVERYONE else does as well. (even the superstars that we spoke about previously, the only difference between them and you is they have learned how to deal with their fears much better. )
Some people go through life feeling as if everyone is out to get them. If they have a problem, they think that they are the only person on the planet that has to deal with it…
Trust me. No matter what happens to you, someone out there has had to deal with the same thing that you have before in one way or another.
#5: Pushing through fear is less frightening then lying there helpless and not doing anything about it.
I once heard of a woman that was afraid of balloons. It was very real! She had this constant fear that whenever she was around them they would unexpectedly pop and a loud noise would go off. Now, this woman could have very well had this fear for the rest of her life. She simply would avoid going to birthday parties, amusement parks, or anywhere else where she thought there would be balloons around. Or…
She could face her fear once and for all. Conquer it. And then live the rest of her life without having this fear for balloons.
Which one do you think would cause more fear? Dealing with it one time and getting over it. Or, living with it day in and day out for the rest of her life? We don’t think about our fears this way very often. Instead, we keep putting it off and putting it off. But if we would just deal with our fear as it arrives, we would save ourselves a ton of grief!
Never forget this the next time that you have a fear. Face it head on as soon as it arrives. This is the only way it will ever go away. So how do we strike up the courage to face our fears?…
The only way to diminish your fear is to develop more trust in your ability to handle ANY and EVERY thing that comes your way.
If you can do that, there won’t be a fear in the world that you can’t handle!
Now ask yourself, what are some of the fears that have keep you from being further along in life then you are? And secondly, how defeat them and more forward?
Here is to your Success!

Another great post Ty, this actually reminds me of something that I was experiencing not to long ago.
Every year I make it a point to attend SXSW; arguably the event is one of the most important industry gatherings of the year. I will admit that prior to going this year, I was fairly Concerned about the macro-economy. The credit crunch, decline in the housing market and constant layoffs had me in the dumps - afraid to move forward with new initiatives, afraid to plan for the future and afraid to execute on new ideas for my career.
For weeks this fear paralyzed me, until my wife reminded me that SXSW was something that I truly enjoy and have for years. Needless to say I ended up going and making a fairly decent amount of new contacts and that my fair was all in my mind.
Thanks for the post, we all have fear as you point out, but what we do at the point of fear is what determines our future.

Ty I have learned long ago that fear is nothing but a myth, in fact I have one of my favorite poems taped to my mirror to provide me with strengh when I need it most.
Its called “Our Deepest Fear” by Marianne Williamson
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
I hope you and your readers enjoy it.
Fear is no more than not reacting to the problem. I think if you face fear then you will win every time!!
