It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the
time that others waste. Henry Ford
*************************************************

“My music is GOOD, I work very hard, but I just don’t seem to be rewarded for it….. Where is the money?”
“How come others that I know are no where near as smart as me, seem to always make more money then me?”
“I guess I’m just not meant to have money”
Does any of this sound familiar? To a lot of people, including YOU it probably will. Even if you are someone who considers yourself to be highly educated, ambitious and hardworking.
But have you ever asked yourself…. Why?
The answer is simple….
And It is basically the limiting beliefs that you hold about money and about yourself that are stopping you from attracting more money into your life. Now I’m not talking about just a couple of even a few thousand dollars here, I’m talking about REAL money… Money that you can buy homes, cars and vacation nicely with.
And, the killer is, your limiting beliefs are unconscious. They run in the background, largely unnoticed.
Carl Jung, one of the fathers of modern psychology said: ”Until we make our unconscious thinking patterns conscious we will keep calling it destiny.”
Now if you really give that statement some thought, really deep thought you’ll see how strongly our current and future situations are linked to our beliefs.
In other words as I like to say “Our INNER World, Creates our OUTER Worlds”….. or to simplify it even more, your thoughts turn into your reality, so lets continue…
I want to share with you what I think are the most common belief patterns that keep most people in the music industry from having the success and eventually money then they often seek to have. Lets start with the behaviours that get created. As you read these, chances are you’ll identify with some of these statements as I go over them (That is if money is an issue for YOU).
Here we go;
1. Money is bad, people who have money are greedy and rip others off or artist who really make usually have to sell their soul to get to the top.
A lot of people were brought up with the very limiting belief that money is *Evil* or that people who have money and success must have done something terible to get it. People who have this belief often shy away from taking up opportunities that could make them more money, and will often self sabotage themselves without even knowing it. This belief often goes hand in hand with the idea that one has to work hard or do terrible things to get money. These people often don’t make as much as they would like to and when they do, it burns a hole in their pocket until every last dime has been spent. For example, look at some of the individuals who have won MILLIONS of dollars playing the lottery, only to find themselves broke and bankrupt years later.. Look up the name “Curtis Sharp” and you’ll see an example of what I am talking about.
The truth is money can’t be bad or evil, only people can. It’s what people decide to do to get money or do with money that can be bad. Money itself JUST IS. Therefore it is just as possible to be a good person as it is to be a bad person and have money. You can decide, and rather than judge people by their money it’s more useful to judge them by their behaviour.
Breakthrough Assignment: If this is you, you may want to think of the way your parents and other significant people in your environment viewed and still view money and how that influenced you and then condition yourself to think the opposite.
2. Money is not important
I have to be a bit blunt here, but this is the DUMBEST thing that I have EVER heard…. I have four extremely smart, caring, lovely children, as well as a beutiful wife and trust me, accidents happen, but when it is time for one of my children to get braces, go to the doctor or even to college… I prefer to have money and as much of it as I can ethically / legally get then to be poor… Point Blank!
People you’ll find that say this often believe that asking for money in return for a service is selfish. These are people who give lots of stuff away for free. They are extremely busy and constantly short of cashflow. Often they are cronically undercharging for what they create and provide. I see this with most of the artist and musicians that I deal with on a regular basis. They have great skill, amazing talent, but not enough confidence to charge what they *Deserve* to receive for their CD, MP3 or show performances…. So they develope the “Money is Not Important” or “I’m a Starving Artist” mindset… Which to me is the most destructive thing that you can do to yourself…
If this is you, be aware that whenever you are not taking money (or not enough) for what you provide, you are sending a message to yourself about what YOU are worth. If you don’t expect a return for what you offer, then you are not valuing what you provide and create (aside from the fact that you will not be in business for too much longer or will simply NEVER make it to Start statues). Often people with this mindset are doing amazing things that add enormous value and instead of being valued they attract people who take advantage of them, even rip them off or use them as the doormat. Look at groups like TLC for example, who by their own admission had no idea what they where worth and ending getting ripped off for Millions of Dollars…… By the way, when doing anytype of business in the music industry, make sure you use the proper contracts.. If you can;t afford a lawyer, start off with the ones that I make available over at http://www.MusicContracts101.com
I have NO problem telling you to buy my music contracts because #1- I know the value that they can provide you, #2- I know how much money they can save you and/or keep you from losing and #3- I have extremely high confidence in myself as well as the product… Learn from what I say, erg type, but also from what I DO!
Breakthrough Assignment: Look at what events and beliefs have impacted your self confidence and self worth as it relates to money and think of how you can change those beliefs. Write down 10 reasons why you deserve to have more money and read the list out loud to yourself twice a day, night and morning for 30 days until you develope a higher self worth.
3. I am not good enough to ask for more
This is maybe the most common selfdestructive reason that most people in the music business have. Instead of not expecting a return for their efforts, people with this pattern actually don’t think they deserve to get more money and success in their lives even if they really need it. They feel that if they asked for more, they would be judged with more scrutiny, the people they serve may get more demanding and may not appreciate what they do as much. They believe they score extra points for providing something so valuable such as an entire CD full of songs that they’ve busted their butt putting together for so little money.
Unfortunately that’s not how it works. On the contrary: Most people don’t truly appreciate the value of something if it is underpriced or they become skeptical of it, wondering “If its THAT good, why is the price so low?”. For most people it’s Expense = Value. Just look at some of the high priced clothing that gets made in the same factories ans sweat shops as the gear that you’ll find at walmart. Its made in the same factory, by the same workers, but one pair of pants gets priced at $18- and the other gets a designer label placed on it and gets priced at $180.00… But their are a ton of people who feel that by buying the $180.00 pair that they are buying more “Value” and would NEVER buy the $18- pair, even if they do realize that both are the same thing!
Many people are afraid of being rejected if they ask for ‘too much’. These are the good girls and good boys and the people pleasers amongst us.
Apart from not putting money into your pocket this “I’m not good enough mindset’ leads to resentment and ultimately to burnout. People with this mindset generally work way too hard for the rewards they are reaping.
Breakthrough Assignment: You may want to observe your own buying patterns. How do you make a judgment on others’ prices. And become observant of the negative self talk that goes on when you reduce your price or have a mental beate over what you “think” people would be willing to pay for your music.
Ask yourself, what are your beliefs around what it means to be rejected? (sometimes it’s as drastic as “I won’t be loved” and “I will die”). Notice whether they are realistic.

Thanks Ty, I have always said that changing your mindset from what you were taught as a child to a healthier view of money will allow you to become the financial success you deserve to be.
Your comments about underpricing my self came right on time. I have been a musician for 20 years, have put out dozens of cds but always have a problem when it comes to pricing my stuff. This info is really valuable. It really is a problem to get estimating and quotations right .
Thanks for your hard work and energy Ty. The article made some great points and to tell you the truth, it even points out some of the bad habits I’ve had as an artist at one time or another.
Thanks for sharing

I feel like a little fish swimming in a sea of sharks.
Money JUST IS, but my concern is definitely with how people manipulate it, and harm others in the process.
I have just today dealt with a producer here in Australia who obviously wanted thousands up front that I certainly don’t have.
I naturally didn’t sign anything, and told him where to get off!
I believe I deserve a break, because I believe in what I do and have over a thousand people on my space who tune into my songs regularly, AND keep in touch.
So, here I am at the HOW? Nose poised to smell the Sharks (I surf, too!) and really going with the adage, If It’s Too Good To Be True etc.

As usual, killer post. You need to believe it to achieve it as my Dad always told me.

Hello Ty
This article was on point. I can identify with the part of this article that stressed the point of not charging what you are worth. I use to be that person. I paid dearly for it. I wrote, sang, produced, arranged, and vocally coached for many artist, and I was only paid $50 to $100 dollars and then they did not even give me my credits when the cd were printed and sold, no contracts drawn up and I did this over and over again. I rensented them, and myself for allowing them to treat me this way. For a long time I thought they would appreciate me more and eventually give me more, but that’s not what happened, it got worse. This is a great article and I hope every artist will take advantage of it.
Thanks a Million$
As usual you hit it right on the head Ty, just like we spoke about in my interview with you a few months back, you know the way I see it.
The best way that I can explain to turn around what some would call “bad luck”,is to realize that now that you know what you don’t want , then it is easier to just ask your self what you do want. Every problem has a solution. There are two subjects to every subject( abundance) and (lack of it)
{1}Sickness is the Absence of Health;
{2}Poverty is the Absence of Wealth:
{3) Stagnation is the Absence of Productivity
{4} Boredom is the Absence of Excitement.
When you realize this , then you have already part of the problem solved.
Anyways I have a new social network management site for ambitious indie artists. And right now I am giving away memberships to musicbizcenter members. (see website above)
I have “The Hater Blockers Tour” with,Flawless Entertainment, coming up this summer and My EP Single Release “Figure it Out ” included on there soon to be released “A&R CD Compilation”

hey,
thanks very much for this blog. I found the bit about ‘I am not good enough to ask for more’ really helpful. Roughly how much should I be asking for, or does it vary?
