Find your genre. I know, you are beyond such things as genre. Your music transcends all genre limitations. But, as you probably already know, one of the first questions someone asks you once you tell them you have a band is “What kind of music is it?” (Which really means “Will I like it?” but they are being polite.) Like it or not, you have to settle down and pick a genre. You don’t have to get too specific if you don’t want to, but the more specific you can get, the easier it will be for fans of that genre to find you. Remember, most websites and search engines will only let you put your band into one genre category. (but you will be able to post songs individually by the song’s genre, so you don’t have to put your country ballad in the bin with your hip-hop tunes) The smaller the genre, the less competition you will have. (because there are less bands listed there) This will make it easier for people who like that genre to find you, and it will help your standings in any charts that a website may have. It’s nice to be able to say you were #1 in the charts for 3 months, and it’s more likely to happen in a smaller genre (like Spiritual Rock) than in a large genre (like Pop). But it will also limit your exposure. Be willing to experiment, and adjust things as necessary.
Genre-specific e-zines. Once you’ve selected a genre you can live with, start looking for websites and e-zines devoted to that genre. They will probably be hungry for new material to review, and will love hearing from you. Don’t be shy about asking what kind of web traffic their e-zine generates, or how big is their email list. You may decide to make them buy a copy, if they only send out 12 copies of their e-zine a month to their readers.
